2000 S500 w/50K... questions from newbie

I'm thinking of buying a neighbors S500 with 50,000 miles. He only is asking 8500 cash for the car (books out at 19,800)

My questions surround reliability. I've read bad stories on the W220 series.. is this a reliable car from you S500 owners?

A different friend is selling a 1999 S320, but it has 125K miles on it.. asking around the same price.

Which car am I going to be better off with? I want luxury for sure, but I also don't want to be stranded.

Try the sticky at the top of the page. Skylaw has put together a great starter for W220 newbies.

Personally (speaking from experience here) I'd stay away from the 2000-2002 W220s. Too many gremlins, the +03 models are more reliable for not much more money.

I wouldn't say the book on a 50k 2000 S500 is close to $20k, probably more like half that. Don't be wowed into thinking it's a good deal. These cars are a dime a dozen.

I was going by NADA... looked it up myself. I just thought for low miles it was a decent deal.

I will check out the sticky, thanks!

Very low miles for a 10 year old car, check service history, regular maintenance and parts replaced, airmatic, etc.

Good luck.
