2000 S500 Engine Races.

I have a 2000 S500 that will not idle. The car starts fine, but revs to approximately 4000rpm where it remainings It pulsates around 4000 rpm (I have read that that may be a safety feature to prevent over revving) I have replaced the MAF (On the advice of others) It did not help. I wasn't told I needed to reset anything after replacing the MAF. Do I? I can't drive it anywhere like this. If I had to discribe it simply, it's like some is flooring the accelerator. I really could use some help here, since there is no way I can afford to take the car to the dealer right now.

Darn, Over 600 views and nobody has any ideas?

I hope maybe someone will look at this again. I bought an OBD II sensor today and hooked it up to the car. I got two codes P0110 and P0100. The MIL DTC code P0110 showed "Intake Air Temerature Sensor 1 Circuit." The Stored code P0100 showed "Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit." Can either of these codes be the cause of the engine racing?

So have you checked the accelerator yet? You are right about the 4000k revs, that is the fastest the engine will rev in neutral to avoid killing itself. My gut says to look at the accelerator circuit. Remember this car is a drive by wire situation. Maybe it's stuck?

Thanx DRTYLNDY. I disconnected the accelerator pedal and started the engine. It purred like a kitten. OK maybe a tiger in kitten clothing :) I thought maybe the kickdown switch was stuck, because it felt sticky. I worked the switch and pedal a few times and reconnected the plugs. I started the car and it roared to the limiter again. I guess I'll be buying a new accelerator pedal.

Good to hear you found the problem.
