How to install roof rack on S 500
I recently acquired an OEM roof rack for my 2005 S 500 sans keys. I was able to have keys made at a local locksmith and they work great (see other post).
The key opens the end of the rack just fine, but in order to lock the rack down I need what appears to be a T handled 4.5 mm ball end hex wrench. I was able to lock the rack down using a 4 MM ball head hex wrench, but it slips and I fear it will damage the mechanism or stop working. A 5 MM wrench is too large. I currently don't have a 4.5 MM hex wrench to test, but one is on order.
Does anyone know which tool I need to install and remove my roof rack?

I'm not sure. I ordered a complete set of metric and SAE ball head hex keys. Assuming I am on the right track something ought to fit. I'll post my results here once I learn more.

Case closed. A standard ball-end 5mm hex key did the job perfectly. Don't buy a short key, get a long one, it's a bit of a reach. The one I am using only goes to 25 degrees and it's plenty. I don't know why it wouldn't work yesterday.
