Question Windshield Washer Fluid Question

I know this has been touched on before but I think I am still a bit under-informed on the subject.....
What is the right washer fluid to be using on a vehicle that has a headlamp sprayer?....Keeping in mind using the wrong product can "scratch" the headlight covers with prolonged use by the chemicals inside the product (like using windex on plexiglass).

I ask because a parts guy at an MB dealer tried to sell me generic washerfluid that I could have purchased at Auto Zone.....

I just want to use what will not damage the vehicle's headlamp covers.

Thanks

-Chris

The generic blue stuff is fine. Its the de-icing stuff that might be something to stay away from. Pretty harsh on the paint.

normal washer fluid is fine.

-20 is also fine, its what i use, but I essentially never use the headlight sprayers...they are pretty useless.

mobilusa: The headlamp washers also serve another purpose: It's really cool. They come out of nowhere! Even if they aren't very useful, that is cool enough for me.

I rarely use them, if at all.
But I am not into prematurely destroying anything on my car, including the headlight covers, to save $3 on the washer fluid.

Thanks for the info, guys. As usual, I appreciate it.

I guess you guys never drive at night on a wet road with spray from the other car's tyres, maybe while it is snowing? Even more drastic: in an area that does not have 100% streetlighting coverage.

You will love that gadget as it restores 95% of the brightness of your headlights.

road spray is a thin film of dirt, it hardly effects the brightness of the headlights.

If its snowing, its a slushy mess that the headlight sprays won't do much with.

Well we have to disagree on this. Maybe your roads are cleaner but on a long trip that "thin film" of dirt builds up on "my" roads.

That snow slush goes away nicely if you spray hot water with anti-freeze onto it. You may need to press the button every few minutes or more than once. Luckily the S-class is heating up the water that you spray onto the lights. Good stuff!

In the snowy north we use the Rainx products. There are several for different seasons. Ice in the winter, bugs in the summer. That heating function in the car reservoi is a good thing.

They work better than the generic blue stuff in any season.

Never, in the 10 years I've been driving cars with xenons and headlight sprayers, have I used these things for any other reason than to see if they work.

pointless if you ask me.

Here in the great white north of canada, they use alot of salt to melt the ice and snow on the roads. Picture driving through that. What ultimately happens is that the salt water spray from other vehicles coats the lights then the heat from the lights evaporate the water leaving a white powdered baked on film. Further splashing just continues to coat the headlight, making it get dimmer and dimmer as the water evaporates further. You can only dissolve so much salt in water afterall......

They work great in these conditions.

Mercedes windscreen washer concentrate

There're two versions of concentrate

Winter version is "WinterFit", part number A 002 986 14 71 10.

Summer version is "SummerFit", part number A 001 986 80 71 17.

Both come with instructions how much water to mix.
