Unusual features and capabilities of the W220

Reading the manual is tedious and I have not done it. Every now and then I get surprised by a new feature I did not know of. I start with one feature and maybe you can add your own discoveries?

I knew that pressing the Unlock button on the key for 1 second (after opening) will open the windows and the sliding roof to let the heat out. The fan in the driver's seat also starts.

What I did not know is this works with keyless go too, in a way. Open the door by touching the handle, pull the handle and hold without opening the door. The windows start opening.

See page 198 of the manual (power windows) under "warning"

The inside rear view mirror is electric but damned if I can get it to accept my settings. Any clues from anyone?

That hissing fart sound is certainly a nice to have feature, at the right time and place. So may I add another feature which I did nto learn from the manual:

The radio has a setting for bass and treble, as well as the fade and sound shape/distribution. I found that this setting is only for the radio and since then I adjusted the bass/treble/fade/shound shape properties for the following an they are now all different:

Radio, TV, CD changer, CD/DVD, NAV, telephone. Left Linguattronic alone.
the telephone sound now comes from the passenger's front seat with more treble, radio has more bass and the MP3 playing is via surround sound.

The devices also remember the (relative) volume setting so I adjusted the NAV voice (while it was talking) to be just the right volume, whereas in another setting in NAV I defined that the sound source playing at the time of a NAV announcement is muted by about 20% only, up from 80% mute.

So true, I managed to do $88 today. It appears that this feature is self adjusting too.

Taking the thread back to the features of our beloved W220, I have to be more precise with that opening of all 4 windows trick. It failed when I did it today when we had a lot of sun. So here are more precise instructions for the 2004 S600 with keyless go. It works on any door; I tested it on the rear passenger door.

1. Touch the handle to open the lock - do not open the door
2. Press the black keyless go button on the door handle and keep it pressed
3. The indicator lights blink 3 times (watch the mirror). Wait until it is over.
4. While keeping the button pressed pull the door handle WITHOUT opening the door
5. As long as you keep the button pressed and the door handle pulled the windows and sun roof keep opening. Stop it anytime by letting the handle go

Hint: while I use one hand to push the button and pull the handle (is actually quite easy) I use the other hand to prevent the door from opening.

While opening is a bit tricky, closing is easy: keep the black keyless go button pressed until the windows are all closed.

You can also point your key at the IR receiver on the door handle and achieve the same effect by holding down the LOCK or UNLOCK buttons... to close or open the windows respectively.

I read that in the manual but it did not work without holding it against the IR sensor.

Anyway, I prefer to leave the key in my pocket; hence I was trying to find a way to do it without the key.

Another thing that took me 2+ months to find is that the mirror in the visor has a little vertical bar on the left. If I slide it to the right a new mirror appears behind which is magnifying.

Maybe your key needs a new battery...

I agree because that works for me. Batteries may be needed in key.

To make these instructions a little easier, just press the black keyless go button once so that the vehicle is locked and then press and hold it for a few seconds. Then release the black locking button and very quickly pull and hold the handle and the windows'll start opening.

The definition of "Unusual feature" is relative. After a while all features become normal. So let's compare the W220 features to a normal full size rental car.

Although most of you know it, depressing the recirculation button for 3 seconds will close the windows and the roof. Pressing the recirc button again will open the windows and roof to their previous positions.

If you use tunnel mode to shut the window and roof then shut off the engine, pressing the recirc button will not return the windows and roof to their previous postitions after restarting the car. When the engine is shut off "tunnel mode" forgets the positions of the windows and roof.

i remember having the problem with summer open/close, if i recall, Skylaw did mention that u have to reset each window including sunroof, i thought the feature was broken but i turned car on, rolled all windows down including sunroof, rolled each window up til closed, then held for 2 seconds - each window individually then sunroof closed, then held for 2 seconds..

i actually stopped using it because of having to reset it all the time.. (also wife having to roll the damn windows down everytime causing me to reset it everytime - i give up)

If you want to read the speed digitally on the dashboard you know what to do: use the buttons on the steering wheel.

What if you want to see the revs per minute digitally? Easy: ensure the key is in position 2 (engine running is ok).

Press the REST button (at the air conditioner!) for 5 seconds and wait until the temperature display changes to setting "0". Then use the left temperature up/down button to move the display to setting number 21. Now you see the digital exact revolutions in the temperature display (in 1000 rpm). Magic.

Pressing REST again gets rid of the magic
