Harmonic balancer blew out! (long)

My balancer seperated this evening. While driving on the highway, I heard a sound that sounded like I ran over a peice of metal and it hit my inner fenderwell. Shortly thereafter, I noticed an unusual smell, maybe hot or burnt rubber. Got home. Then drove off again, not expecting that anything significant was going on. After a bit the battery light came on intermitently, then more often. Water temp became a tad high (upper 80's), steering started to go, battery light came on constantly, then temp started to rise rapidly , shut it down.
The motor was hot, overflowed a bit, but quieted down pretty quick. The outer balancer was off and wedged up against the fan. Belt was still on everything else. So, hopefully there is no major damage. I am most concerned that the engine got hot.
Is this a common problem on S class, and is it likely that it did heat or other damage to the internals?
Thanks

What year is your S Class?

The crank pulley on 2000 and 2001 mercedes are notorious for failing. And everytime it does fail, it's pretty disastrous. Your dealership should be familiar with this flaw.

Mine is a 2000 S500 with 40k miles. Fortunatel, I wasn't pushing it hard. What a PITA! I was planning on getting my illuminated door sill on tomorrow (all 4 doors).
So much for that
