Sometimes I forget...

just how awesome this car is.

Just took a 200 mile drive to philly and back.

Its just so effortless. 22.6 mpg (500 4matic), smooth, quiet, and comfortable.

I don't think you could find a more perfect highway cruiser.

I agree. I just had some suspension work done and now it's tough to keep it under 80. Fantastic highway cruiser. I have a couple 1000 mile trips planned this summer and can't wait to get on the road.

Agreed, took my 600 from VA down to Florida a few weeks ago for the (scrubbed) Space Shuttle launch. Considering the 750miles or so of I-95 I had to drive down are some of the dullest highway miles I've ever done the journey was rather effortless and I wasn't remotely tired or stressed out by the end of it in either direction. Not bad considering on the drive home I left at 6pm, getting home at 4am.

Trip computer reckoned I was doing 22.7mpg at a steady 75-80mph...I calculated it at more like 20.8mph when I filled up, having brimmed it and then driven it to empty without stopping. Not very often I end up doing that! My furthest drive ever to then was about 240miles!

Yep, I did 450-mile 1-way trip from LA to the Bay Area twice in 1 week and I couldn't be happier. Once was with 4 people and a baby and trunk full of luggage and once by myself. Perfect.

I'm thinking about getting a W221 though... I don't know why. Should...stop...obsessing...

Yeah, it's not bad at all, although it's more like 9mpg on my drives around town and on my 2 mile commute.

I did have a few things in my favour; no traffic so holding a steady 75mph or so was effortless, I was the only person in the car, basically no elevation changes and I didn't need the AC on. I also have very little in my trunk...a quart of Mobil 1, an umbrella (shoot me, I'm British!) and a very light icescraper for the winter months. Obviously before a long journey I double checked the tyre pressures.

What's interesting is the NA V12s from '01 and '02 were chipped to turn off some of the cylinders at cruise. Would be interested to know what one of those gets on long journeys. Though given their reliability it's probably more like they'd only reach the end of the driveway before breaking down

If I had the extra power the 65 had my average would probably be closer to 1.26

Yes, for an AMG, you're not driving it enough. It's too high.

When I had my W211 E55, I was averaging 8mpg.

When you view the violation online, they give you 3 very high resolution pictures of what you did and then they also give you a video of the whole shebang. They set it up so that you can't save the videos.. but me being smarter than your average bear... I saved it and it's on YouTube!

I'm fairly certain it's still over-egging the actual mpg, to be determined when I fill up today.

that's pretty funny - just like in Beijing, China.

After observing for a while during prior visits, I finally asked one of the local taxi driver what the rule was. He explained that on red lights where you're trying to make a right turn, stopping is optional - unless there's RED RIGHT ARROW.

I didn't think anyone could reach over 55mph on a Long Island highway......
