Exclamation OK so i didnt know about the 00-02 S600 Problems Please help

OK so i bought a 01 S600 with like only 37000 miles all maintance recoards the works beautiful car fully loaded. For my mother for her birthday. I work at a car dealer and took it in on trade (I cant drive or i would have kept it )I cant have her afford to throw money at this thing and fix nothing as i ahve to pay for it I didnt know about all the problems they have till its too late. My car CEL is on and runs good at normal driving. Floor the car at a dead stop and it go into limp mode and runs bad. Drive it nice at first then drive kind of hard drives fine can feel all the power it has. I had it STAR scanned and had an Independant MB service place. MB says start with BOTH coil packs and something else all totalling over 2800 in just parts.

The other shop says its the ME-SFI computer all together and its 2000$ installled both are saying diffrent things and i dont know what to do i dont want to throw 2-3k on one or other and have it not work. Pluged reg dig. computer in and it says mis-firing on half or all cylnders and something about the cats? also on a seperate note my odometer displays ------ but everything else works fine Indy place says its the ECU 0r ME-SFI whatever and it will fix all problems odo included MB says its the whole odo and i need a new one and its not covered under the recall as its 6 months too old what does someone suggest I do actually i guess i worded this wrong what has other 00-02 s600 owners done to fix this without spending 6k? do i have to spend 6k to get this thing to run good again or is it something stupid like MAF needing cleaned before i go blow more money on TRYING to figure a problem out vs just fixing something

Sell it, endless money pit. This is the same reason I got rid of my 01 S600, I couldn't get rid of the misfiring/CEL after dumping over 8k into her. Changed both coil packs, 24 spark plugs, MAF, and various other components. It would run fine for a week or two them begin misfiring again. My best bet is that the coil packs are causing the issue as it is very common for them to go out. Get her running and sell her, it will cost you a lot to keep her on the road. Good luck

I'll bet dollars to donuts your mother would never know the difference between a nice 500 and this 600.

If you can make $10k selling it, do so, and then buy a 2003+ S500 with some nice options.

far less expensive to repair.

Yeah and I knew what i was getting into its just bad timing and bad info from people who didnt know what they were talking about I just put a ton of money down for the car so i dont have a lot of extra cash laying around main reason I posted this is to see what other people say/did to there s600 to get it running it cant be impossible to figure out whats wrong without fixing everything and just seeing as the MB dealer told me I mean it could be a air flow sensor and have no real problem who knows even if its the main computer 900 for the computer + labor is cheap compaired to coil packs and such 3k just in parts in the coil packs and both at once?? with 36000k miles sounds kinda weird I had a 97 s600 that ran forever and the current s600 runs fine at normal driving so im not too worried about it its not like my mom is going to try to go from 0-60 in 6 secs anyway but nice to know what i need to fix

A Mercedes obviously!
The early W220 600s are an absolute liability, and remember the old adage, 'a cheap Mercedes is the most expensive car you'll ever own'. I wouldn't bother chasing ghosts on these vehicles, you'll spend thousands on a vehicle worth pennies.

If you can dump the vehicle and make $10k absolutely do it, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. If you want a better W220 experience do as OliverK suggested and get a newer 500, or even a 600. In the long run it'll almost certainly be cheaper than throwing cash at an old 600.

Yeah ill probally fix it keep it for 6 or 8 months and sell it I own it next to nothing (12k?) and wholesale blue book is over 20k and get the TT S600 next time around unless this ends up being a keeper if i can get it fixed cheap or figure out the problem lol but sounds like that isnt likely

I agree with Oliverk get rid of it and buy a newer S500 with less problems. If the book value is 20K and you have 12K in it then sell it for a quick sale 15k and let the new owner put the extra money to fix the problem.

'a cheap Mercedes is the most expensive car you'll ever own'

this is very true, i test drove a 2002 s600 before my s430 and something popped under the hood, engine shaking and told the guy hes lucky he didnt sell me the car and he towed the car back.

if its ok with mom, sell the car ASAP!!!!!!! DEFINITELY take that 5-10k profit and put that towards a 03+ s430/500/600/55/65

Mercedes
12k for a 2001s600 is about typical price. I doubt youll make any profit, let alone $10k profit. The low mileage helps you but no one will buy the car except at auction. Or unless you swindle them by hiding the issues.

I passed on early s600s for $6000-7000 because of ABC problems.

The longer you wait to sell the car, the higher chance of more going wrong.
Then you will NEED to fix it before the sale.

dude, thats great, but why not sell it now so that you won't have to spend stupid money fixing it?

The early s600s are just not worth it.

Mercedes
the car WILL have problems in the future: ABC, coil packs , oil leak, etc. Each one will be a $2000-4000 job. Are you ready for that? Sell it and get a s500 or s430 with Airmatic.
