p0173 - i know what the code means....
common MB code...
i put a new fuel pump, no help...

02 sensor ? MAF sensor ? where's the best place to get o2 and maf w/o going to the stealer ? it's $$$ there and ebay stuff can be shoddy.....

Hello James:

I've got a '96 S420 W140, so different chassis from yours, but had the same codes w/ some symptoms recently. I'm not out of the woods yet, but so far so good after replacing the MAF and the O2 sensors. Here is the run-down:

-Car started cutting out when accelerating, or while idling, the car would almost stall, then come back.
-After scouring the threads, the fingers pointed to Mass Air Flow sensor. No codes at this point.
-By disconnecting MAF, the cutting out went away. Car ran OK, but not great (was definitely running rich).
-I bought a MAF off of eBay (a no-name "replacement" for $72). Installed, and although cutting out problem went away, the car had almost zero acceleration and ran like garbage. NOW it throws codes at me, P0170 and P0173, fuel trim.
-I got an OEM Bosch MAF from AutoPartsWarehouse.com, $290 and a new air intake boot (the piece that connects the MAF to the air intake on throttle). Installed easily and fits tight, which is good (no air leaks)
-Also inspected the O2 sensors...both pre-catalytic convertor O2 sensors were white w/ silica contamination (i.e. they were shot and had not been replaced in 70K miles). The downstream sensors (post cat.) were dirty but not overtly. Bought 4 new ones (Bosch) from RockAuto.com
-Also replaced some crankcase ventilation hoses that were brittle (one cracked). LIkely not cause of codes and bad running, but a good idea while the air cleaner housing was off

Conclusion: Car runs like normal again. I have put 100 miles on it over the last 2 days since buttoning it back up. So far so good. Moral of the story, BUY OEM parts! I learned this the hard way. It's worth spending the $$$ up front. Especially considering these parts will last you a while and not have to be replaced often.

I hope this helps. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Best Regards,
Steve

s class codes

ah,,,..good info...yeah, this thing is 01 w220 and has 90K miles....haven't done much to the car in terms of emission issues to now it's starting to pop up i guess....

i had the abc light go off yesterday on my wway to the tire store....front end just dipped and was scraping the tire on wheel well then it went back up....

i wore off one of the back tires in 5K miles.... completely even wear...the other side was better.... can't figure it out.... usually i get 20K on 300 wear tires....

anyway,...maybe i'll reset all the codes and trade it in for a different car before i go over 100K miles...

or fix it and use it....it still is a nice looking car....did the new front headlight and rear tail light so...looks fresh....

tnx,

eng fx, etc

well, put in an oem bosch maf sensor , got it for $150 on ebay...
the o2 sensors are supposedly ok per indy.. CEL out now....all fine there but the guy says i should change all the plugs and wiring.... he says it's misfiring at times... i can't tell..it's smoothe as a baby....

anyway, at 90K, i got a airmatic strut leaking on front right, the lower control arm bushings are all shot...., washer fluid leaking...

and the SRS light goes on and off randomly ?... is that something to do with the airbag sensor? can it be from the washer fluid leaking down on the front part of the car where the srs sensor is ???

thinking of changing all 4 struts to arnott's ; airmatic $750 per corner...not worth it when i can get all 4 for $1400.... and not worry about it going bad again....

what do you think ?
