I think that's normal no? My car does the same thing. I asked the dealership if they could turn that off for me, but I dont think they can.

I'll wait for others to chime in...

Oh, I didn't know it was like that. Thought you were talking about the gradually increasing volume.

It is a setting on the Comand unit. You will need to ask the Dealer to get into the service menu to disable it with the Start diagnostic tool I blieve. My car is getting this done right now. It was really annoying.

The Bose Audiopilot speed compensating volume setup was very poorly executed. If you can get the dealer to turn it off, I would.

How much does that cost or will the dealer do it for free?

The dealer does nothing for free if you arent a regular customer.

It could also be a sticky "up volume" switch on the steering wheel. Mine sticks sometimes.

Read your owners manual you should have the ability to disable this option on the command I do. It really gets loud around 40 to 50mph and does not seem to lower it's self when driving in the city.

2002 S430
There is an automated volume adjusting system. If you set you volume you like with all windows and sunroof closed, and later you open a window, the volume is increased automatically until it compensates the noise inside the car. When I close the window and shut the outer noise out, the volume reduces to the original setting automatically. This is how my S430 works and I think it is not just normal but quite a pleasant device. Now, if the sensor malfunctions or the system goes haywire somewhere else, you might get your sudden annoying rapid increase. That cannot be normal. Good luck to find the fix, may be the system just needs a tuning.

Maybe it's bumblebee from the Transformers movies and it's trying to talk to you but seriously could there be a setting that increases volume to compensate for road and engine noise? Not sure about the W220s audio system but just a thought.
