MB 2003 S600. Volvo 2003 XC70.

Check where is the oil come from. If it comes from a valve connected to the downstream side of the housing seems the CV(Crankcase Ventilation) is working. When there is only a small mount of oil then it is normal.
Under light load the Crankcase Vapour will be sucked into the intake. But under full load with throttle wide open the vapour will go to Air Filter Housing. After years there will be some oil accumulated.
You could use the Plastic Bag method to check whether the CV is working properly.
- Start the engine and let it idle
- Open the Engine Oil Filler cap
- Use both of your hand hold a plastic film/bag to cover the filler opening, HOLD it, don't let it go
- If the CV is working then the vacuum from the intake will suck the film, this is good
- If there is no vacuum and film is blowing out then you have a problem. Postive pressure will blow vapour/oil out and sometime damage the gasket.
Give it a try.
