exhaust tips

why is it that i see some s430's which seem to have the same dual exhaust (tips) as the S55 and S600? they weren't "kids" who simply added that on their own. i'm assuming it came like that from mercedes? reason for me asking is because i want to buy the amg look chrome tips from ebay which are bolted on. does anyone know if this has any negative results such as a vibrating/rattling sound? does it effect the throat of the exhaust? thanks much.

A.S.

If it is just the chrome tips, I doubt there is any different other than the look. If you bolt them on tightly, there should be any more noise.

There is no sound difference. In fact the exhaust still exits through a hole in the bottom of the tip. They look great from the back. From the side, you can tell they're tips. Better than buying a whole new rear exhaust system.

The S55 has 4 tips, and the S600 has just 2. It will look like the S600, except the S600 has cutouts in the bottom of the back bumper that the pipes sit under. Go to formymercedes.com to see pics of the tips installed, if you haven't already. They give you a good idea how they will look.

But wouldn't the addition of S500/S600 tips require cut-outs to an S430 rear valance, or a whole new valance all together?

Wow, very nice! The entire car has its own flavor. I see the tips look very nice with the side valance. Something more to think about...

I'm looking at this picture and I can't see how this tip will fit our S430's angled down tip. But, this car in the picture is an S500. Will I need to have my tips cut to make this work?

bbenz, these are real simple bolt ons. If you see the top of the tip that angles up, this is fitting onto your downfacing tailpipe. There is actually a hole in the bottom of each tip that the exhaust exits through (not the back). You can kind of see the hole if you look for it.
These tips are adjustable as to how high or low you mount them. You can use a cutout valance, like apricotscrub and get a very good look, closest to the S600. I mounted mine about 1/8" below the stock valance and they look fine also.

Actually, after looking at the pics of apricotscrub's car, the Carlsson rear valance does not look like S600 rear. It is unique. The S600 just has minor cutouts (rather subtle) that the pipes tuck under. It's all good.

I bolted mine on in case something better comes out in the future. It's a bit of a PITA (1hour) if you are a perfectionist and want to get them lined up perfect. Be sure to use Loctite on the allen screws so they don't loosen up.
