W220 S600 Wont stay running

My 01 S600 began to have quite a rough idle until the other day and now will not stay running.

The engine turns over every time, if given gas it will back fire, if floored it will stay running rough at around 1500 rpm. However immediately after will shut off. It will turn over every time then shut off once started. Just replaced all 24 plugs, problem persists.

Any help appreciated, not under warranty.

Did the check engine light go on? Pull the codes and see if you're getting misfires on one side or the other (or both). Odds are one or both ignition coil packs need to be replaced.
I just did my left bank in December...and just ordered the right one today. They can get damaged *very* easily when pulling them out to get to the plugs...it's also common for them to just go bad. They're about $1200/each, one for cyls 1-6, the other for 7-12. You could also check to make sure they were plugged back in properly when they were replaced, although the type of plug that it has makes it hard to not put it on properly. Good luck!

The engine light comes on then goes off. I believe it is on right now. Would this also cause a rough idle/acceleration, yet operable engine previously?

I ran with my #2 cyl misfiring for a little while...sometimes it would start and run fine (light throttle) and drive normally, but if I got on the gas, it would trigger the misfire and start to shudder and the power would reduce a lot. Stopping and re-starting the engine sometimes helped, but eventually it happened every time I started the car. I just noticed you've got an '01...I've got an '05 so I'm not sure if/how the coils differ between the engines.

I suppose it could be something different, but it sounds strikingly familiar to what I went through after changing out my plugs. Get the malfunction codes checked, that will help narrow it down. If the light is flashing off and on, don't drive it.

Sounds to be exactly what my issue was. A restart would rectify it temporarily. Thanks I will look into new coil packs. If you have any good sources for parts post it please. Thanks!

I got mine from Amazon.com, best price I could find and with Prime, it's Free two day Shipping, or overnight for $3.99. They also have a great return policy and 1 year warranty on it. For my 2005 S600, the part is a Standard Motors UF-578 (drivers side) and UF-579 (passenger side). You may need to do some research in case they're different on your engine.

Also pull the codes to see which side is misfiring. Cyls 1-6 are passenger side, 7-12 are drivers side. Code of P301-P312 with the last two digits indicating the cylinder that is having issues (P301 would indiate #1 cyl misfire, P309 is Cyl #9, etc.)
