S55 vs. S600

Last weekend I had the opportunity to test drive the 2003 S55 and the S600. Amazing cars, both of them.
I was more impressed with S55. It seemed quicker and the shifts were much more crisp. Louder too! The S600 had a bit of a lag when I would slam on the gas.

Anyone else experience these fine cars. Any comments, preferences.

The reason why u felt the quicker/crisper shift in the S55 is because AMG programmed the tranny for quicker upshifts, etc and better handling.

In the S600, I'm betting that the twin turbo lags a little, hence the lag in acceleration?

I hope i can experience them two cars sometime...amazing machines!

I had to choose between these two cars a couple of months ago and went with the S55. The S600 felt a little nose heavy on sharp turns and that actually did it for me. I test drove these cars three days in a row and the the S55 just felt more agile. As far as styling, though, the S600 cannot be beat. I'm waiting until the next generation S-Class to get the S600. Right now I'm patiently awaiting my S55.

Enjoy your new car Karma. The S55 is amazing. Made my '99 E55 seem slow and tame. I loved the engine sound at full throttle. Makes you totally forget that you are driving a 4500 lbs luxury car.

MB are being really cagey about quoting full acceleration figures for the s600 and s55.

MB quote 4.6s 0-60 for the s600 and 0-60 mph 4.6 seconds for the s55

However although the s55 has a better suspension set up for grip and sport driving, the s600 would be likely to have more straight line speed although bhp is similar it has it lower down and it has more torque, 74lbft more over a wider and lower band. Gear ratios are similar.

S600 5.5-liter V-12 that pumps out 493 bhp at 5000 rpm and 590 lb.-ft. of torque from 1800 to 3500 weighs 4,610 lb.

Car and driver got the S600 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, to 100 in 9.7, and through the quarter in 12.5 at 115 mph and managed 0.86 g at the track !

S55 V8 it has "only" 516 pound-feet from 2750 to 4000 rpm
Net power is 493 hp @ 6,100 rpm weighs 4,300 lb , not seen any tests yet

Although the s55 is wieghs 93% of the s600, the engine has to work harder and has only 87.4% of the pulling power (torque).

So the cars performance is going to be pretty close and on paper would favour the s600 ?

2004 S 600
Take a look at the posts Treynor has put up with his S600 2003 at the dragstrip. I think the facts show the S600 to be the hotter car. IMO, the 55 or the 600 is a sedan......neither made for the twisties......not true in Europe where they sell a shorter wheelbase S.

.............Road and Track tested the S600 against its BMW 12 cylinder rival. There was no comparison. In the article the S600 did a 0-60 in an astonishing 4.3 secs!

The 760Li stands no chance. Maybe as a passenger car, but then i'd rather get a Lexus. The S600 is the ultimate flagship sedan from any three of the major companies. Four if you include the Audi A8. (I do not know of anything higher that Audi offers.)

I'd go for the S600 because of the V12, and the name that goes along with the best. I'm not saying the S55 isn't honorable, it's just Mercedes is known a tad bit more for class then brute power.

exactly. My friends thought I was crazy when we saw that article in R&T and I said I would take the S600 anyday.

They thought that 760 looked better

I think the 7-Series does look a tad better than the S600 only in certain angles, which mean and that do not involve seeing the rear end. Also the 7-Series NEEDS large rims because I saw some with 19's sitting next to one on 20's and the 20's even then, still looked small!

I'm sure that S600 is faster than S55, that's why I bought S600! even tho my F360 is slower than my S600! the 590lb torque drive me crazy!
