I had 245/45-18 Continental Extreme DWS on all four corners and was very happy with them all around with performance (including Chicago snow) and amount of wear I could get from them.
About a month ago, I stuck two 275/40-18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZP (Zero Pressure-run flats) on the rears and absolutely love them back there (haven't dealt with them in snow yet though). Noticably more of traction off the line for sure. The sidewalls are super stiff and reinforced because of the runflat feature.
Some may argue about this size on an 8.5" wide rim (9" would be ideal), but it seems to be wearing just fine (~5k miles), and they don't bulge noticeably (probably due to the stiff sidewall). Picked them up from Discount Tire, who also cross-referenced it and said it was an acceptable "alternate size" (meaning they would assume liability to sell it to me and mount it). It's also within .01" of circumfrence of the stockers according to their calculator, so no speedometer/odometer issues.
Just my 2c.
