Changing rim size won't help with the gap, since when you do a Plus 1 or Plus 2 sizing the overall wheel diameter remains the same, and the tire sidewall is reduced accordingly. The car will ride very stiff on 19's and stupid stiff on 20's. My recommendation would be nothing bigger than 18's if you currently have your Airmatic set soft ("Convenience").
On an AWD car, I think a square set up makes more sense. Staggered set ups are intended to give the rear drive wheels more bite. I'd be at 18 x 8.5 all around.
One way to deal with the gap is to keep your stock wheels and lower the car. I just did a minor drop on my S430 using adjustable links from Adjustable Air Ride. It was a very easy, tool-less install and took about ten minutes a side. I did the fronts myself and then had a local shop adjust the rears while the car was on the lift. (W220's have factory adjustable rear ride height).
Lowering will stiffen the ride a bit, but if you don't over do it the change is minor. Here's my car after the drop on 18's. About a 1" gap front and rear. The car feels like it's set on Sport 1 when its on Convenience, but hitting the "raise" button puts the car back at original level and the ride softens up accordingly.
Post a pic of your car and I'd be happy to give you some wheel ideas.
