Instrument cluster / dash lights dimming intermittently on S430

Sometimes all of the instrument cluster lights on our 2006 S430 will start pulsing - going dim then bright. They don't go all the way out, and its the the whole panel not just one side. We took it to a dealer thinking it's related to an instrument cluster failure recall, but they said it wasn't and could not duplicate the problem.

What could the possible sources be - bulb, fuse, wiring? Could a weak battery cause it?

Not sure it it could be related, but the left low beam only works intermittenty.

I had a similar problem with my s500 when water came in through the front funnel that normally gets clogged, and it was a computer defect.

Where is the funnel? Strangley, sometimes when I pull out of the driveway a bunch of water leaks from under the front drivers side. Last time I took note that we had heavy rain the night before.

Sounnds like that is your problem, open your front hood on the top portial there is a plastic funnel looking part where water enters from the hood vents, look closely inside if that is clogged then your problem is that water is leaking into the car, therefore your computers are acting up ehen they are wet moist. eventually they will completely go bad. It's cost me around $2200 to fix my issue.

There is large plastic waffle grille located at the top of the engine compartment by the wipers

it covers a reservoir and "funnel" hole that gets clogged with debris and water collects, this water can then leak into your passenger compartment and cause thousands in electrical Damage

Either get a very long thin screwdriver or similar object like a chopstick down through the plastic waffle grille , and clear the drain hole at the bottom of the plastic reservoir

All the water should dump out under your car

I simply broke the tabs off the waffle grille and used my finger to clear the drain hole- water was pouring in my passenger footwell causing Damage

if done carefully the "waffle grille" pops off so you can clean and then snaps back into place once your done.

I'd say make sure your battery terminal is secure. I had mine pop off while driving and the cluster was like a Christmas show.

No No and No... It is a manufacturers defect that the power supply goes out on the cluster for w220s. Mercedes I believe warranties it for like 10 years. My car did the same thing about 3 months ago but I decided not to go to the dealership just in case they try to pull the "its not covered under the warranty" BS and have to end up paying for diagnostics fees. I bought a service on ebay that cost abouit 150.00 for shipping parts the labor. I removed my cluster using the required removal keys that I also bought on ebay for like 6.00, sent it in to the repair vendor and within a week I was back in business.
