Add 1.0 Litre of OIL visit workshop!

Just a word of warning, went on a 250mile trip, got the above message a couple of times, I was on motorway so no garages. Anyway finally got one & bought a litre of oil but didn't put it in as I had a schedule to keep.

Parked the car for a short while, went to start it again & it started but shuddered, I quickly knocked it off, was a bit concerned so tried again, same thing, yikes, so I went to add the OIL, engine was cooking so I left it til the next morning as I was in the hotel car park.

Added the OIL the next morning & car started perfectly. Drove 50 miles & added another 1IL, now it says OIL level OK. Completed the 200Mile trip home no prob & no errors.

Anyway, word of warning when it says gimme some OIL it really means it, assuming that was problem. I'll be carrying 1Li of Mobile 1 0w40 in the boot!

/me braces himself for talk of coil packs & so on

You could really be damaging your engine. Do you have a big oil leak???

Many of us 2003+ S600 owners have had a faulty engine oil level sensor. The oil pan must be removed to replace the part, but that fixed the problems for me and others.

eeek, not that I know of, no oil on the drive. think it's OK, out maybe 1500miles on it since the last oil change, think I read in the book it can burn a litre every 600 miles depending on how you drive, so that's about right to be 2litres down. at least that's what I'm clinging too!!

Will look into that sensor, it does seems to saying OK now, I'm going out to check now too!

Edit: Says I have 8.5QTS of oil, which is about 8 litres so that sounds about right, my message came up about 1.0 when I actually needed 2.0.
Do ya think I should replace that sensor given that it does seem to be (well at least the warning) a little off?

Some sensors seem to be faulty. The cost of the sensor is maybe $125. Remove oil pan, swap sensors, make new oil pan gasket with black silicone sealant.

Probably keep a close eye on the situation. 0w40 isn't cheap, and 600 miles per liter sounds horrible. Over the 12k mile oil change, that's 20liters of oil!!!!!!! My car doesn't even consume 1/2 liter over the interval.

Mercedes
Turbo cars can gobble up oil if the turbo seals are cracked

Op didn't say his car is consuming a liter every 600 miles, just that its been reported by others

I'd just monitor the situation and see how much yours is actually consuming before replacing any sensors
