Trunk Will Not Stay Up

I have searched both this forum and benzworld and can't seem to find any responses. I have seen a couple of threads but they are several years old.

Here is my problem. The trunk opens fine with the key, button on the trunk, and the button on the door. However, once it is all the way open after about 5 minutes or so it will slowly drift back down. You really have to keep your eye on it so that you don't get bopped in the head.

I have check the pump near the battery and put enough ATF in it to the fill line. However this did not resolve the problem.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? All of my soft close features work just fine. 2003 S500.

If you have refilled the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir, there is only two places to cause this trouble:
1) the actuator is leaking internally passed the piston seal, or
2) the selector valve or run-around valve (both internal to the pump body) are leaking.

Before anything else: are the gas springs ok?

My next step was to replace the trunk struts. I don't know how difficult or easy they are to replace. But I can probably purchase both struts for around $100.

I have a similar issue with my 2005 S600. If I am on level ground the trunk lid opens and stays open fine. If I am on even a slight grade (my driveway has a mild slope) the trunk opens normally but after a short interval slowly drifts closed. Very annoying when it hits you on the head while you are trying to unload the trunk! Any place to start to diagnosis this or is this normal once you exceed a certain grade / slope?
Again, it works fine on level ground, only happens on a grade.

I had the same problem on my S65, and after I replace the two trunk struts, it solved the problem.

Can you tell me where you bought the struts from and how to replace them? Thanks

Simple pop off and pop on. Google "Mercedes S500 trunk strut" Avoid the Ebay listings for $20 each, they ship from China and probably wont last very long. Here is an example of a reputable vendor...

Yes, a bit pricey, but the OEM struts from the dealer are $170'ish.

I had similar issues with my car. I took the gamble & bought a new pair for my trunk and front hood off ebay from a HongKong supplier for $29 each. The trunk struts had the original Mercedes logo and part# sticker saying Made in Germany and they work great. The front hood was after market brand CNBA and one of them started leaking air and bubbling immediately after I installed them...10 minutes later hood was falling back down. Fortunately I emailed the seller and he issued me a full refund. I then bought another pair off a different seller so in the end it worked out and I'm satisfied. You can still find genuine MB struts on ebay if you want to go that route also. YMMV.
