2005 S500 cut wires drivers side side view mirroe

This is a tough one....I have a 2005 S500 4Matic Sport, great car, 100k miles. The LED turn signal on back side of drivers side rearview mirror and the light on the bottom of the mirror that shines on the ground both stopped working. LED is good, so I took things apart and found that 5 wires in the harness that feeds mirror assembly were cut near the hinge area. I have folding and heated mirrors and have the "convenience" set up to fold, so after 100k miles the wires somehow got out of place and snipped, car was never in an accident nor was this area of car ever taken apart.

All wires are cut at the same place, so the ends are all of the same length, since they are all same gauge and color (black) reconnecting took some work. I determined which of the cut wires go to the LED turn signal and the light that shines on ground with volt meter, soldered/shrink-wrapped these and now the LED and light that shines on the ground work, fabulous!

However, the three remaining cut wires go to the mirror: two of the cut wires go to the plastic connector block that slides into mirror and the remaining one wire is one of the two with the "Spade" terminal that goes to the back of the mirror. I cannot figure out which goes where....I have tried measuring voltage with defroster (front and back) turned on to try and determine which connections (Spade or terminal block) energize defroster in mirror so I can reconnect these and then the others are easy. But I can only find .45V or so coming from the single wire with the spade that wasn't cut and on of the other three remaining wires...are these two (spade terminals - single wire each) the defroster??? Voltage seems way too low. Assuming the other two wires take a signal from somewhere (rearview mirror in car?) to dim side mirrors????

Is there an MB mechanic expert who can help me solve? If you do, I will send you a nice bottle of wine, seriously!

Let me know, thanks.

Martin,

I'm not a MB mechanic but hope could help.

For connectors on back of the mirror class:
- The two spade connectors are defroster;
- The black connector with two wires is dimmer;

See my maintenance thread for details and pictures:
https://mbworld.org/forums/5773388-post187.html

There are 17 wires to my driver side mirror:
- 2 for folding motor enter mirror housing separately;
- 4 for LED and courtesy light go to housing cover;
- 4 for defroster and dimmer go to mirror class;
- 7 for mirror class angle adjuster.
