Mercedes NTG1 V14 Map 'backup' DVD
No DVD Available – Please Insert Navigation DVD.
That is the message which appears on the display of my W220 Command Centre when I insert a ‘backup’ DVD acquired from a web site that sells 'backup' Navigation DVDs. It is the correct one. NTG1 V14. NTG1 V12, purchased from another source awhile ago, worked fine. I cannot find that vendor now.
Now for the boring bit; what is the problem with this DVD? One of the files on the DVD is checksum.md5, which contains a list of files on the DVD along with their checksum numbers. I need some tools: first of all TextPad to read the checksum.md5 file then a means of calculating the md5 number of the files. I find rimd500558.zip, which is just the job.
Here is what I get:

You will see that two files do not have the correct checksums; this is why the DVD does not (will not) work.
However hard I try to impart this information to the supplier the message comes back that I am not putting the DVD into the drive correctly.
After many emails from me, the contents of which are ignored, I am repeatedly advised to insert the DVD correctly and one stating that the person has no idea why it does not work (really!), I get my money back. That occurred when I advised I was going to raise a dispute with PayPal. I would love to know who the ‘many people’ are who have successfully updated their system using this Mercedes NTG 1 V14 (backup) Map DVD from this supplier with a fancy web site.
A few days later:
The DVD I ordered from eBay arrived in a nice case - looks very official - and cost twice as much as the first one.
Here, for interest, are the MD5 checksums. 1st line is from the MD5 checksum file and the 2nd line is calculated from the file. No errors in the numbers so it all looks good.

There was an apprehensive moment when I thought it would not work but, eventually, the software loaded, the map and destination list appeared. All set now until the next update - if there ever is one.

Well, of course such a "backup" DVD purchased from a vendor, and not a backup of one you own, is simply a pirated copy. No sympathy here.
The best solution is not to use pirated material.

Sympathy?
My post is a report about a problem for the information of interested people. It is totally devoid of emotion, as technical reports should be. You may call 'emotion' somebody saying they don't know what is the matter with it when you have carefully explained the problem to them but it takes all sorts and just because you sell something does not mean you understand what you sell; ask any counter assistant a technical question. There are also people who make comments about what a person may post on any forum without reading, or having an understanding about what the person wrote. Maybe they have nothing else to do.

Yes. Kraut56, and there was plenty in his first post that confirmed that the first DVD mentioned was pirated, and perhaps the second. On the other hand, the second one may simply have been a used one, and was being resold - but not the first.
Hardaker, in fact I do have an understanding of what was going on. As an engineer, and as an attorney who has practiced in the area of intellectual property and the author of a number of issued patents, I can spot piracy easily. "Backup" (wink wink) DVD indeed. No matter who you buy pirated material from, it is pirated.
No sympathy for your bad purchase.

Laving aside the piracy aspect here. I think your problem could be that the V14 nav disc is not compatible with the W220 command APS.
The last one Mercedes did that works is V12. not sure why support was dropped but if you google it you'll find out its true. I did try to tweet them a while ago but the only answer they come back with is "have you spoken to your dealer about this?", not helpful.
