ANY HELP FROM THE EXPERTS PLEASE!
For the last 3 days I have had Battery Check Visit Workshop appear on dash and then go away.
When it appears the lights will switch off so I turn away from the Auto position and on Full and lights stay on.
Today as I was driving the message appeared again but stayed on. While I was idle the tape switched off and the ESP and ABS warning lights come on.
I switched the car off and would then not start. It just makes a click sound and would not crank. Once or twice after a few minutes it did crank but seemed like a weak battery.
Any ideas what it could be? Not alternator is it

Start checking the simple things. Most likely your battery is about to go, but give it an overnight recharge, clean the battery terminals and see how it starts the engine.
Alternator can also be the culprit, draining the power and not recharging properly.

My mother-in-laws '06 S320CDI has a somewhat similar problem. A battery message that says it is switching off accessories comes on and the fan on A/C go to lowest speed. It stays like that a few minutes, message goes off and everything returns to normal. Had it diagnosed as being a battery control module.

I had exactly the same symptoms on my Lincoln Navigator. It was the alternator that had failed without any indication from the dash idiot light. New alternator and charge battery, like new again.
