New door handle not fitting snug

Just replaced a rear door handle and it's as if the spring that keeps the handle flush is weak or I have installed it wrong. It works perfectly but it doesn't return all the way and sticks out a few mm.
I can push it in but it won't return all the way after pulling the handle. Anyone have a known solution?

Than you John, I took the panel off last night since what I thought was going to be a 5 min job to replace the handle (as in the past) the handle screw that is normally held in place by a plastic clip fell down inside the door panel so I had to retrieve it. The door handle internal assembly is I suspect damaged so how so I will need to get back in there and figure out why the handle doest retract back in place all the way. Again, anyone that has had the same problem, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks
