Tire change causes cruise control failure??? 2000 S500.
Hey guys...
I have a 2000 S500 w 19" aftermarket wheels. I just put new tires on and suddenly the cruise control has gone batty. The original tires that came with the car when I bought it were Conti Extreme Contact: 255 35R19.
The guy at the tire shop encouraged me to go a bit wider in back as original equipment for this vehicle spec was a staggered setup -- albeit 16".
So the new setup is Conti Extreme Contact: 255 35R19 on the front and 275 35R19 on the rear. The cruise control worked perfectly before changing the tires...
Now it is not so good. It seems to do just fine up to about 60MPH. If I go past that speed, it will inevitably shut itself off... as if you had just tapped the brakes. Also, the indicator bars on the speedo go into a flashing mode.
However, no malfunction is recoded in the system status indicator.
I don't see how widening the rear tires by 20mm could effect the cruise, but again, the only change made to the vehicle was the tires.
I should point out that electrically and mechanically the car is in fantastic shape. Just had B Service at local MBZ center and the only recommendation was new wiper blades and eventually addressing a small oil leak they found. Otherwise everything appears to be working in top shape.
The car has just over 120,000 miles on it -- very low mileage for a 15-year-old machine.
Anyone experience this? Any thoughts? Thanks!
