Help I'm freaking out!!!

My 2000 s500 wont shift to reverse sometimes... I found out that if i put it back in Park then again on Reverse it would engage. It shifts perfectly smooth to R,N, and D but it fails sometimes on R. My speedometer also stops working after i drive 3/4 of a mile and my OBD2 says its a speed sensor or something like that. This is giving me chills and nightmares. Please Help!

I think you should check your transmission control unit, or the wires going to it. When ATF leaks on the wire harness coupling, it makes the computers go crazy. If not, then you might need to check out the shift solenoids. Your car has 2 reverse gears. SPORT and COMFORT. Try the other one. Can you get your car checked by a STAR diag computer?

Sounds like fluid leak from the plug damaging the conductor plate

Very common problem

Another possibility is the plastic piece inside the shifter has started to fail. Once they break the car won't shift out of park

If it's going into R ok but doesn't actual drive or move in reverse then suspect the atf fluid is too low.

Somebody is selling all 3 types as a package for less than that recently. Can't recall but it's on a forum someplace. The trouble is selecting the correct one before you order it. You have to take the gear selector apart to measure which one you have. I gambled on the 11mm width and had to file it down and use washers to make it work. It was tricky to get it just right.
