I think that my first action would be to put a very good high-amperage battery in the car. They don't do well at all with a battery that is even slightly weak...

Indeed. The first checks/trouble shoot procedures must be the large fuses under the passenger floor and a high amp battery
A battery that shows as charged on a trickle charger may not be strong enough for a w220. You really need a brand new high amp battery and make sure the battery cables are making good contact
The pictures shows a cheap used super start battery which is weak even when new connected by jumper cables . When I try jumping my mb often cheap jumper cables don't flow enough juice to crank . I have to use the commercial quality cables
