Talking Is the S class still better then the BMW 7?

Hi everyone, Am new to this forum and after reading a lotta threads it seems most of you have great knowledge at cars so tell me do you think the S class is better even after the new BMW 7 is out? I live in the UK and Germany where some days back I got to see the 760Li at the BMW bldg. in Munic, It sure looks very cool in person besides certain interior and ofcourse the rear of the car. And one more thing dont you think the BMW is over hyping it's iDrive? I mean it just controls your audio ; nav; Etc. So how is that an innovation ? I mean doesnt the Comand do something similar in a simple way? BMW says iDrive controls abt 700 functions most of them are stuff like volume control... bass / treble for your audio etc. now do we always keep changing those things while driving that Bmw can claim that it's designed to keep you focussed on the road? sorry if I spoke a lot but as far as I'm concerned i dont think BMW has had ANY true useful Innovations besides their gear box but then again the MB S class when launched had more innovations that BMW could have done in their entire model range... And also if BMW wants to reduce the buttons on the Dash well..anyone ever closely look at the layout of the A/C in front? looks like it's a rip off a truck or something!
From what I think... S Class will always rule the 7 ... take my word when the next generation S class comes out... BMW will again have to delay their next 7 series launch by a few years...

I test drove a Black 745i at New Century BMW in Alhambra last weekend. I think the new 7 series is a wonderful car and it gives the S class a serious run for the money. The new 7 series is vey techy, comes with standard 19" wheels, and gets wonderful gas mileage for its performance claim. Fit and finish is first class as is with the S class.
I was very impressed by the 7 series. It has beautiful masculine lines and nicely appointed interior. There is one flaw to the first year 745i model. The salesman told me that the shift buttons on the steering wheel can only upshift and not down shift due to gas guzzler consideration for 2002. This glitch will be fixed next year after the 2003 model has been applied the proper gas guzzler tax.
But if I were to spend that much money on a car, it better be a Mercedes S class. There's nothing like a S class that shows people that you've arrived and arrived in style.

My unlce just bought a 745i loaded ... for that price ... its pretty small. I love the fact that the S clas has gotten rid of long body style versuses short and all cars are one lenght. i ... iL ... either way it was very sporty...the seats didn't suck me in like the s class...they were a lil stiff ... but i like the car over all

Both the S-class and 7 Series are superb machines, but in there own ways. In one way, you will have the ultra roomy, luxurious, powerful s-class. On the other hand you have the super sporty 7 series. But either way you can't go wrong!

Me personally, i would take the s-class.

The last test made in AMS (Germanys biggest carmag) between a S600 and a 760 was won overall by the S600. Interestingly enough it also won the traditional BMW-area "Fahrdynamik". (something like "driving performance").

...and the new S-class is only one year away.. in Europe at least.

I remember reading this article as well. While the 760il is a very competent car, it was just simply beaten in every category (with the exception of cost that is, not only of the car, but insurance, which can run up to $10k a year).

Even the "then new" variable valve technology, which was supposed to save fuel ended up doing nothing. I seem to recall that the BMW had higher gas consumption than the S-Class just to keep up on the highway...

Apart from the exterior design and many interior ergonomic isssues, BMW made a big mistake with this car; they added new technology like software engineers (no pun intended ); because they could. The driver was just not part of that equation. Very unBMW like...

Mercedes are high-tech cars too, but it just doesn't get in the way of driving; they're intuitive...

I have just taken delivery of a new 760Li, i already had an S500 00' and have kept that car, however i am very impressed by the BMW, i have grown to love the styling, while it is in no way understated if you want a car that says "get the hell out of my way!" then this is the car for you. I have found the ride to be equal to the s-class but the handling a little more responsive. Considering the price differential with a similar S600 then its a no brainer, although watch out for the depreciation. However, at this level im sure you will be happy regardless of which car you choose.

Good Luck!

I am not sure what everybody is talking about when it comes to pricing. The base price of the 760il is only $8k below the S600. Given that a fully decked out car (plus taxes) will run about $150k, this is very little difference.

Buy the car you want, the depreciation alone will take their toll on either anyways.

my apologies i was refering to the australian pricing, 760Li is 60K cheaper than an S600 here, and depreciation on BMW's is considerable worse than a comparable mercedes.

A very subjective dilemma,S class will always be better to people choosing to buy it and vice versa.

No offense, but why not buy a car because YOU love it, not your neighbor?

I would definatley take an S over a 7 any day, but thats because the interior is way better, appearance wise, the torque of MB engines, and the styling is more refined and maturely executed.

The attention I get from girls is good- I know right away not to date them! Also, being young, people judge you in a large MB. Id rather be under the radar, but I love the car! Sorry to ramble..

Exclamation

Both S-Class and 7-series are great machines, but 7-series is too ugly externally and no match for W220 body perfection. Yet, 745 is no match for 500 (had a number traffic light of races with two of my friends who proudly own ugly 7s ). Another point is that 7s is in fact are more techy but once you drive 7s and then switch to S it makes you feel like switching from Honda to Jaguar...
JMHO

And yet, I like the idea of raised and large screen that Beemer implemented in 7s and MB will produce starting from W221....

re:

I think the s-class, at least asthetically, is untouchable. It is the only car in the luxobarge segment whose looks cannot really be criticised in any way. It looks luxurious, sleek, sporty, refined, etc. all at the same time. It's looks are timeless. It came out five years ago, but looks like it just came out last year.

Inside, it may not have all the latest tech, but at the end of the day, that is not what a car is about. If the car is not right, no amount of tech will make up for it. However, the car can make up for relative lack of tech.

regards,
raj

2002 S430, 2001 ML 55, SL 55 on order
i recently replaced my 2002 S430 with a 2004 745 and i love the bmw. It is better in most respects in my opinion. the only think i liked better on the mercedes was the parktronic system. i am still a big mercedes lover and might switch back if the new s class is updated well. love my sl55 to death.
