Steering play

I own a 2002 s430 160k milesI have just started to experience a little play in the steering. From a parked and moving position there is a little slack in the steering. I have checked the joints on both sides and they don't feel like they have any play in them. Any suggestions where to look? Thanks

Have a helper move the steering wheel back and forth continuously, just a couple of inches.

Check for any free play between the steering wheel and the steering rack input shaft.
Check for free play inside the rack.
Check for free play in the joints at the ends of the rack.
Check for free play in the tie rod ends at the steering arms.

Check the adjustment of the front wheel bearings. Make certain that you really know what you are doing before you try to adjust them - this is a safety-critical item!

Thanks, I'll check those things. I agree about the safety thing. I just want to be able to try and locate possible issues so I know what I'm getting into. Thanks again.
