Digital Speedometer
I currently have an '01 S500 (Trading it in when my new CLK 55 comes in), and I heard that there is a feature where you can get a digital speedometer readout that you usually see in cop cars and such. I am not talking about average speed, i'm talking about an actual speedometer. How can I activate this? Also does anyone know if it is on all Mercedes (including my '02 CLK 55)?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I think that feature started for 2001. To get to it, bring up the main odometer menu in the instument cluster, then use the up-and-down arrows on the steering wheel. It should be the first or second sub-menu from the main odometer display. It's just a regular old digital miles-per-hour display, nothing fancy. But it's a nice feature to have.
Is this digital speedometer in the manual?
Is this feature in the instruction manual???? I tried searching through the menus but to no avail. What's the exact procedure? Thanks for any help anyone has.

John,
Dave (mbtech208) is correct (again).
I've got the digital speedo-option on my '01.
I rarely use it (like to see what track my Sinatra CD is at on my dash-display), but believe you access the 'digital speedo' option via the menu that requires you to be at a "full stop" before making changes (other options on that same menu are 'choice of language' ... 'MPH or KM' ... 'Preset or Scan' ... etc.).
I'll mess with it today when I get tired of listening to the Chairman (not likely, but possible).
Worse comes to worse ... get a little mileage (pun intended) from your Tele-Aid system ... hit the 'I' button and let MB Customer Service walk you through it. (I've got less than a month left on my 'free' initial contract ... and I'm getting every second of my 30 minutes ... last week I called in and asked the C/S Agent to give me directions to the closest 'Gentleman's Club' (A.K.A. "titty-bar") ... after SHE picked herself up off the floor, called all the other agents over to listen in, she gave me the directions. I called back 10 minutes later to complain ... the place she gave me directions to was just topless ... so I made her (well, I asked her, really) to find me a place that was full-nude and 'full-friction' ... told her its been a rough month at the office and Daddy needs a little TLC.
Needless to say, I couldn't throw her off ... she came back NOT ONLY with the name of another place and the directions to it, but must have called ahead (probably to find out what the heck 'full-friction' meant) and GAVE ME THE MANAGERS NAME, and said I should ask for him when I arrived!)
Now that's what I call service!!!
Though, I probably shouldn't hold my breath waiting for MB to ask me to give that story in an on-camera testimonial for one of their 'satified customer it happened to me' commercials.
I can see it now: " ... whether I need Roadside Assistance, Technical Advice, or a drunk-stoned-naked-teenager to rub me up and down for money .... Tele-Aid has me covered."
What was the question again John?

You called MBUSA to find that out?? Wow Adam, you have a little too much time on your hands. And I think the reason the CL and S don't have that feature is because it digitally tells you your speed when you set the cruise control or adjust it via the stalk. I could have sworn the 2002 S-class had that feature, but I guess not. Oh well, score one against me.

I had to find a reason to use that damn little "i" button (teli-aid) for once. I figured I would call and play stupid to see what the MB rep would do. Actually worked out pretty good. They answered within 30 seconds and had my answer within the minute. Not too shabby. I'm still not going to renew to Teli-Aid though.

I WAS right, to some extent. The digital speedometer function came in the CLK, C, and E-classes for 2001. For 2002 it came in the CL and S as well. I just drove a 2002 S500 today with the digital speedometer. From the main odometer display, the digital speedo can be brought up by tapping the "down" arrow on the steering wheel once.
I'm intrigued by awiner's call to MBUSA with the response that S and CL don't have digital speedometers. 2002s do. I just turned a couple on (a CL500 and an S600) to make sure I hadn't lost more of my marbles. Yep, they have digital speedos.
But definitely he has too much time on his hands.

Curt, in my call to MBUSA, I specifically was asking about the 2001 CL/S Class. I assume this is why the MB rep didn't find anything. However, it does surprise me that the rep didn't interject that the 2002 models have that feature.
And yes, I did have a lot of time on my hands sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on HWY101 (California's Parking lot) ! It's amazing how much time per year I spend sitting in traffic or hardly moving. If I were to add up the hours per year it would be astonishing to say the least. Ahhhhh... California... Land of Sun, beautiful women and traffic.
