Airmatic strut failer question.

Airmatic strut failer question.
My S430 is showing the "AIRmatic stop, car to low" warning. The drivers side front strut is bad and that corner is now sitting down to close to the tire. I realize that I need to have it towed and the strut replaced. My question is, why is the compressor not trying to lift the car when I turn it on? When the car is running I don't hear the compressor, when I depress the dash switch I don't hear the compressor trying to lift the car. When I turn the car off and wait a minute or two, I hear the compressor com on for maybe three to five seconds. When the car to low warning appears does it stop the compressor from working so that it doesn't burn out or blow the relay and fuse? Or....am I looking at replacing the compressor to because it has gone bad? Sorry if this topic has already been beaten to death in a previous thread but when I searched I couldn't find anything that answered my questions. Thanks for your reply's and help.
