W220 Acceleration issue?

Hello,

I’m experiencing a strange, intermittent issue with my W220 S500L.

Last week, it randomly went into limp mode when driving up a steep ramp out of an underground car park. It flashed up ‘ESP error visit workshop’ and began revving itself between 1000-1500 RPM. I restarted the car and the ESP fault cleared, though a delay in the acceleration performance of the car (out of sync with the pedal if this makes sense?) remained.

The diagnostic computer flagged up codes P0120 and P1580. The mechanics kindly cleaned the throttle actuator and reset the computer. I then test drove the car again, their efforts certainly did something as the car felt smoother when idle, if not the smoothest ever since I’ve owned it. The issue did not reappear after a further scan that day. The car returned to its normal state (fast in accelerating and accelerating in sync with the pressure I apply to the pedal etc).

The next day (after the car had been parked some 20-24 hours), the lethargic, out of sync, erratic acceleration symptoms returned. Once again, the diagnostic computer pulled up code P0120. This time I opted to change the whole accelerator pedal unit, including the sensor with the brand new original Mercedes part. Again, the car drove normally again for a good 24 hours.

Fast forward to today and when I turned on the car it randomly revved high for a second or so then went back down to idle without me once hitting the accelerator or brake – this has never happened before. I’m no longer experiencing any ESP error appear, but the acceleration performance randomly becomes poor or is delayed/out of sync. Yet sometimes when I restart the car, it completely returns to its normal, standard smooth and fast performance.

Could a bad batch of fuel in my tank from when I filled up last week at a station that had just re-opened after a couple years, have caused this? I mention this, as I filled up today and immediately the car performed better but it’s hard to say given this is an intermittent issue.

I would honestly appreciate any advice or experience(s) you may have in solving this, as its very frustrating and I want to fix whatever is wrong.

Thanks for your time.

Mercedes
No it's not the gas
you clearly have a problem with the engine electronics but the challenge is to pinpoint which module /sensor /wire may be faulty
