I have 2000 S500 and while i was fixing my rear axle shafts, decided to replace diff seals as well. But I dont know how to get to them. As i know, w220 had two types of differentials. first where rear axles were just held in with retainer rings and you just have to push out axle and then pop out seal and replace it. Second type of diff, where axle is connected to the diff via 6 bolts and a flange or disc. Picture attached. So i guess that seals are behind those flanges, but thing is: I cant figure out how to remove those flanges to get to the seals.
My guess is that whole differential should come out, then unbolt diff cover and those flanges are held either with some kind of ring or pins, and those pins should be removed within the diff to slide out flanges.
Can anybody confirm it? I dont want to brake them trying pry with crowbar, or drop whole diff out just to see that there was no need in doing so.
