Given the low level of camouflage at this point and the introduction within the year means that the most of the sheetmetal is probably close to the real product (shape/proportions). Chances are the head/tail lights will get some small revisions yet.

Premiere at the IAA show in the Fall 2005. I assume it will be ready for purchase soon thereafter... Q1 '06 for the US sounds about right.

I wonder where the new CL (W216 ?) spy shots are. I'm sure they design and test the CL and S together.

The "latest" is just a photoshop. Look at the placement of the door handles and how far they are away from the windows in the real pictures compared to that one.

I cannot wait for this, it certainly looks promising. They are going for a much more sporty look with the W221, in which case I cannot wait for what the AMG is going to look like.

I thought the CLS was quite ugly but the AMG version has completely changed the look, it now looks quite tasty!

2007 S600

Yesterday, I went to my local MB Dealer. They said the new S Class will come out in 06 and the 600 in 07. My wife has the '05 S600 right now and when her lease is up she wants the 07 600. The dealership wants 500 dollars deposit in 6 months and can get her number 1 on the list. They will also not do any markup. I thought it was a good plan. Any comments?

Interesting is that the Maybach design appears to make it into the back of the car...

If that is what it is really going to look like then I am in awe. The absolute beauty, gracefullness and richness is unspeakable. I love the current S-Class and based upon previous spy-photos I wasn't diggin' it. But this represents what the three-pointed-star is all about.

Imagine an S320 CDI..... shedding tears of joy right now. Sniff Sniff

the "new spy pics" just above me is looking like they are heading towards the look of the E class, just a little longer, esp on the side/rear window. Is it just me? I am not a big fan of car companies going toward this similarity look between there cars. Why pay for a 80k car that will look similar to there 55k car. MB, please build personality into your cars. I like my 04 s430 because it looks like NO other car in their line up, but still looks like a MB.

What a shame to borrow so much from that fugly creature that is BMW 745..................

I wouldn't believe that just yet. They won't be stupid enough to put in a system like the 7 series, they know its crap and so do BMW, which is why there is a much improved version in the 5 series, where not everything is controlled by the knob. I reckon Mercedes have put that in on purpose to throw people off. I don't think Mercedes will copy the worst feature of their competitor, they are smarter than that. After all who is the company which brought most new technologies to the car world?

Channel 4 4Car reporting is silly aswell, saying the 6.3ltr V8 will push 600bhp and that they will also use the "6.5ltr" Maybach engine for 500bhp. Firstly the Maybach was not a 6.5ltr in the first place, the 6.3ltr v8 will produce 500bhp/500nm and the 6.0ltr bi turbo amg will produce 600bhp/1000nm as many of us know already.

update from C&D:

Spied: Surprising S-class

Flagship shows influence of Maybach and BMW's dreaded over-teched iDrive.
September 2004

Caught testing nearly undisguised is the redesigned 2006 Mercedes-Benz S-class. Expected to debut at the 2005 Frankfurt show, the new big-body Benz is longer and wider than the current model. From the spy shots it is clear that the rear-end styling has a Maybach influence, and the greenhouse and the roofline borrow heavily from the upcoming CLS.

Inside, Mercedes has wrought a cabin that seems clearly influenced by BMW's controversial 7-series. The dashboard design plainly imitates the big BMW with a center display to handle infotainment and COMAND system duties. A close look at the center armrest reveals an iDrive-like control knob. Furthermore, a reduction in dashboard buttons suggests that most controls will be operated by this knob. Hopefully, Mercedes will make the system more intuitive than BMW's infamously obtuse iDrive.

In cars bound for the U.S., power will come from revamped gasoline V-8 engines. The previous-generation three-valve heads are out, replaced by four-valve heads that, along with direct injection, should increase horsepower. Keeping fuel consumption in check will be a cylinder deactivation system that will shut down cylinders at cruising speeds. Current-generation naturally aspirated V-12 S-classes used cylinder deactivation before the engines were turbocharged in 2003. Not too long after the standard models are launched, expect a more powerful, naturally aspirated, 6.3-liter V-8 AMG version with at least 500 horsepower, as well as a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 with over 600 horsepower. New diesels are reportedly in the cards for European customers, but it seems unlikely that we'll see these engines in this country. All engines will be mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Several new safety systems will grace the S-class. To achieve compliance with the 2006 European crash regulations, the car will sport external airbags that allow it to keep a low hoodline while protecting pedestrians. The airbags inflate out of the grille and cover the front of the car to cushion anyone unfortunate enough to step out in front of the new S-class. A crash-avoidance system makes use of the automatic cruise-control sensors. If a terminal closure rate is sensed, the system will automatically apply the brakes. The system also will have a lane-departure warning function that will alert the wandering driver to an inadvertent lane change.

The 6.3 AMG V8 will produce in the ballpark of 500hp and 600NM NA.

However just speculation, but I think this engine <may> be turbocharged to keep up with customer demand of more power and torque, coupled with 7G tronic, its going to be a missile!

I think they will leave the 6.3ltr naturally aspirated. That way it gives a much bigger gap behind the models which is needed. The S63 then S600 then S65.
