W220 Shifter Replacement A2202673124
I am having classic P1856 issue with shifter (2005 S500 4 Matic). My original part number is A2202673124. I have a question for knowledgeable members here.
I know another (upgraded?) part number A2202673324 needs to re-program to "talk" to receiving car. But does anybody know my version A2202673124 also needs a reprogramming?
If it so, who does this programming and what would be cost?
Thanks.

I'm afraid that it isn't quite that easy...
Modern vehicles have moved far beyond the ignition lock and alarm system for theft protection. For the W220 series, MB has designed the cars with four Theft Relevant Parts. The electronic key, the ECU, the EIS and the shifter are hard-programmed with the VIN and other identification factors, and all four must agree before the car will start. While it is possible for the dealer to provide a "virgin" new shifter ($$$) and then program the new unit to match the other three parts, that would be an expensive way to go. It is basically impossible to install just a used shifter and make it work, even if you have an SDS (STAR Diagnostic System). It is possible to install all four working parts from another car.
If you are good with DIY repair, you might see if you can repair your shifter...
