2006 S430 4Matic
Exclamation 4Matic suspension "problem"

Hello, you guys have helped me in the past, but since I lost my login info I just decided to log in with FB and start anew.

This is what's happening in a nutshell. My car is a 2006 S430 4Matic. If I leave the car for a couple days without driving, when I return to it, the front right (passenger) side is all the way down. I have to start the car and it refills and gets back to the proper position.

I have found the part, the front shock for the right side, but before I do that, I want to hear if there is anything else that could be the problem, or if anything more could be the problem. The part is quite expensive, not crazy but up there, and if I can avoid this I will. The reason I put "problem" in quotes is because once I start the car, everything is fine, I have no problem with driving or anything else, and if I drive daily, this doesn't happen. It's been happening for about a year now and I put about 20000 miles on it since the problem started and it's exactly the same. There are no cracks or leaks on the top of the shock, the only place I can look, and while it does squeak a bit, I put silicone on that and it stopped.

Any help would be appreciated!

Chris, where do you live? I ask as you should run SDS diagnostics. I and other members have the machine, and we are often able to help.

While the most common leak source is the fabric and rubber rolling diaphragm inside the strut, that is by no means the only possibility. A couple of others include a leak in the air line between the valve block and the strut and an internal leak in the valve block, in the valve that controls the air to that strut.

Many of the folks on the forums recommend the Arnott rebuilt struts, with a lifetime warranty. You might check their prices and delivery times and compare those to a dealer's new and rebuilt struts. One or two folks have bought Chinese struts, but most folks are pretty leery of those.

I have a 2003 S500 with 65,000 miles I bought new in 2004. My wife drives it. I have the re-engineered Arnott on the front and the OEM Arnott's on the back, no issues in two years. I have also rplaced the compressor twice and the valve body once in the last 15 years of ownership.
