Overheating issue, any help is appreciated please.

Hello, so I recently just purchased my 2000 S500 and I love it. But during a long trip the other day, it started to overheat. I was in NYC so there was traffic. Of coarse I did not let it go in the red or to the point of steam or anything like that. On the way there it drove fine and the A/C was cold (didnt have it on the whole time). The coolant system was presurized still which did not make me think a leak. The check engine light has been on, but went off ojt of nowhere today strangely. It was a slow overheat though, it was only while sitting in traffic, but I put the heat on max and kept it at 100°C, without the heat it probablly would have ovetheated more and I didnt want that. When on the highway and the heat on, the car was at normal temperature. I am going to change the thermostat and flush the coolant system tomorrow. I am a little confused to what is happening, I was thinking maybe a fan issue? Maybe air in the system? The car runs and drives completely fine. The guy i bought it from said be just changed the water pump recently. Could it be he didnt burp the system?

Not 100% true, but usually slow overheat at slow speed is an airflow problem. Make certain that the radiator fan is working properly.

Thats what i was thinking myself. It shouod come on if i crank the A\C, correct? If theres its not coming on, would that be the fan itself or what else should i check?

Yes, if the AC is on (the little red light in the AC button is not on), the fan should come on when you start the engine. If the fan does not come on, the more common problem appears to be the fan speed regulator. There will be numerous threads on this forum and on the BenzWorld (a more active forum) W220 forum. https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220-s-class/ Both forum have search functions. Using Google to search for w220 cooling fan will also get you a lot of info.

Ok i am confident I have a fan issue now. What do you think could be the best way to go aboit fixing it? Just get the fan speed module? Or would i need the motor as well? Like i said, eveeytning was fine the other day until I went to NYC for day trip, i guess i put too much strain on it. It must have been getting old.
