Instrument Cluster
My instrument cluster went out last night while we were repairing my soft close door and window. The funny thing is I smelled it but could not figure out what that smell was. Then about 3 minutes later I noticed the instrument cluster was only showing the orange needles and the center lcd was flashing while all the other lights were off.
My question is..... Can I replace this with an updated cluster which has the auto folding mirrors option? All the other parts have been coded for this, but they do not work and I read somewhere they say you need an updated cluster for this.
Also, the situation with the mileage. I also read where they say that the 01 mileage is stored in the cluster while the 02 to 06 is stored in multiple places on the vehicle. Can I install an 02 to 06 cluster, code it and have it accept the mileage from the old cluster or would I be stuck with the new mileage reading? I would rather not fix mine if I can get one with the auto folding mirror option.
Thanks

I suggest you go directly to 'the Horse's Mouth and query MBZ North America Tech Support. U.S.laws and rules are different than other countries. A Dealer will have the equipment to communicate with 'The Factory and do it correctly and legally. It probably CAN be done by other 'hackers' but MBZ integrated 'modules, fiber optic and CAN networks are unbelievably complex. There are literally hundreds of different settings, codes, adaption values and so on that MUST BE PROPERLY SET or you can'brick the car.'

And with the 01 and another 01 the miles will transfer to the new cluster as long as you download the old cluster using Star and the used cluster has been virginized. I figure it's the same with the other versions, but was really looking for confirmation. Since coding an 02 through and 06 (W220) requires multiple locations to be coded as the miles are no longer stored in just the cluster (EZS). The miles are stored in at least two other locations...
Thanks for the reply.

Just an update. The 06 cluster does in fact work on the 01. With the upgrade you get the new software, hidden menu & convenience menu, separate key convenience control and auto folding mirrors.(Mine still do not work so I need to see what i'm missing now) The miles have to be reprogramed though as they are stored in the cluster.

So I programmed the correct mileage back in. 238K from 176K, and I went to reinstall and noticed a blinking light tucked in the very back. It turns out my car has not 1 but 2 trackers. LOL
