The dealer let me take the car to a German auto repair shop. They did an inspection and ran the diagnostic software. they found 3 airbag related faults
1. B1875-007 Fault in communication with the control module A35/8 or a wire fault exists.
2. B1315-003 The component or signal wire to B48 has open circuit.
3B1521-005 Fault in comm with B48 front passenger seat occupied recognition.

Since all three error codes were related to the SRS light on the dash I was wondering what a guestamite would be to fix the faults. The shop said that they couldn't tell me how much because its a mercedes ( and I assume they would have to start trouble shooting it and no telling how long that would take to figure out the solution. I have a stars diagnostic system and was wondering if maybe I should go ahead and buy it but for a reduced price?

Otherwise they did a thorough inspection and said the car was in excellent condition. The suspension and all the rubber boots were good. The tires are 11 years old so they need to be replaced..

The passenger occupancy sensor is a common failure item. The part is $75 -$100 used, about $200 new. Replacement requires removing the seat and stripping the leather from the seat bottom, I would strongly suggest treating all of the leather seats first, to reduce the chances of ripping the leather. Videos and write-ups are available on-line,

No idea on the control module.

I bet fitting a new passenger seat occupancy sensor will fix all the issues . This is a common problem

This is not likely to be the problem, but...

Before buying a replacement sensor, check the plugs under the seat, and make certain that the sensor is not just partially or completely unplugged.

You could also disable the seat sensor if you need to.
Although it would be a bad idea to put a child there incase of an accident as the airbag will deploy.

Before you put down the cash for the sensor mat, there's a relatively inexpensive module for testing that out.

Mercedes S W220 CL C215 1998-2002 Seat Occupancy Mat Sensor SRS Emulator Bypass eBay

CL C215 (1999-09/2002, cars before facelift). We advise you to inform all users of your vehicle about the presence of the emulator. Do not not place the child seat on the front seat! Be sure that fitting this emulator is not against any law in your country.

In the case of the project 2000 S500, it conclusively pointed to the sensor mat in the passenger's seat, which I subsequently bought.
