'01 S600, the car mercedes will never admit to ever having built..

or thats the impression i get..
not from mercedes but from other owners..
yet this car drives beautifully, UNTIL..
last year when exercising it there was a loud bang (never a good sound) and when i got home the hydraulic oil was gushing from the rear driver side wheel area..
OK, been there before when the same thing happened to the fromt driver side..
another hole in the hose part of that long steel part 220-997-76-82..
$185 incl shipping and one will be here sometime..
my maintenance guy who does those things i can no longer do don't want to do does all the hard part and i engineer the replacement procedure..
my reason for this post is WHY did MBz put a short piece of hose in a long steel hydro line..?
why not steel all the way..?
i ask because about '85 i had a '62 lincoln convertible that had hoses all over the place and several dozen relays all to put the top up and down and the hoses started to leak SO i took it all apart and replaced all those hoses with steel brake lines, bent to conform to the needs of the cylinders..
result was it worked fine until i sold it to a car collector..
so why can't i, next time a hose blows on the S600, just replace it with steel brake line..?
it would be a helluvalot cheaper than the $185 for the real part..
just a thought to toss in here..

you absolutely can . Usually the flexible sections are to allow for movement

then that is exactly what i'll do..
this particular part has a junction block at the front end but thinking about that i could just cut it off and flare the end of the steel pipe IF that could be done to the steel..
damn! i should not have sent the remains of the old part to the dump last saturday..
this S600 has become sort of a survivor.. i just added it to the insurance on the '59 dadillac since it can now be considered a collector car..

Don't flare, use compression rings and fittings.
Just enjoy the car, it's at an age where small things like this are not really that bad.

The hose sections may also act as absorbers of high presure pulses from the pump. All steel lines would not and could lead to vibration.

Just a thought.

You can probably safely replace most of the flexible hose incorporating lines with fatigue resistant metal lines using either 'brake line quality double flare' or industrial quality Compression fittings. Hydraulic grade and design flare fittings will work OK. Single flare household plumbing fittings are not suitable for the high pressures and vibration rich environment. Plain steel lines are low cost but are rust and corrosion sensitive. Steel/copper alloy is flexible and fatigue resistant and good as are 300 series stainless (304 is good for this service) Be sure and incorporate expansion bends/loops to avoid overstressing end fittings. Sourcing the metric end fittings may not be easy, but a good industrial hydraulic shop should be able to help you out and cost a lot less than the Dealer or OEM replacement part. And. U.S. manufactured hydraulic hose will last several times longer than the German made stuff.
