I have a 2000 S500, and a few months ago, the navigation stopped working. I bought the car about a year ago and it (navigation system) was working fine until earlier this year. Whenever i push the NAV button, the screen either reads "No Navigation CD, Please insert Navigation Cd" or "CD Reading Error, Please change CD"--the navigation cd is in the system while it displays these messages. I have also used another navigation cd and the same messages appear. Any suggestion as to what i can do to fix this problem? Thanks.

I understand that is not an uncommon problem. Apparently the comand 2.5 drives are prone to dirt build-up.
First step is to try to clean the CD drive (the laser lens). Just buy a CD drive cleaning kit from Radio Shack or Best Buy and try that first. If that fails, you can still make a trip to the dealer (hope it's starmarked).
Good luck!

2004 S 4Matic
I have a S4matic 2004. Recd vehicle 10/03.
My navigation is also very sick. I have been to the dealer scores of times in an attemp[t to fix but nothing has really helped. It appears as though there is some conflict in the command unit.
I have found that by shutting down the vehicle, which even means removing the key for two minutes and then restarting the navigation will operate normally.
This has been a huge problem for me.
The dealer has totally replaced the nav unit; has reflashed new software and just about everything they could do they have done---nothing!!!

Do audio CDs work?
Not sure if this feature is the same for my 2000, but the my2003 Comand plays Nav and audio CDs.
If my NAV stopped working for any of the 7 nav CDs in the case, I would pop in a regular audio CD to check if the platter motor and laser carrier is working correctly.
If I didn't hear audio either, I would assume it was a disk drive error.

My 2000 S500 also experienced the same problem you have, I think there's no way to fix it other than replacing the whole command unit...because that's what the MB dealer did to my car (by replacing a new 2002 version command unit under extended warranty).
