Instrument Cluster LCD doesn’t work

It’s not the end of the world, but it’s really annoying. Idk why, but the pixels in the LCD display instrument cluster seem to have gone poof. The backlight works, and it turns red warning me about the SRS light, but if the car is cold (like... less than 15°C cold, not even freezing), the display effectively displays nothing.

Isn’t there a recall on this or something?

Is there a fix? some spray? (joking)

Check the Youtube channel. There is a fix, not simple but possible. It is a small transformer and some discrete parts which gave up to deliver proper voltages. So the illumination of the LCD is gone.

It's not the illumination but the pixels that seem to be broken...?

What youtube channel are you referring to? I'll happily do some soldering

My 2005 S55amg has the same issue. If the ambient temp is below 70* the odometer/info lcd screen is dim. After a while of driving the lcd display warms up and is visible again. There is a vendor on ebay that offers a repair service. You have to send your entire dash cluster to them and they do whatever they do and send it back. I was considering using their service, but uneasy about sending it out and God only knows if and when you'll ever see it again. I guess they are legit. I'm not certain if the issue is with the lcd screen itself or the three transformers that are associated with the screen.
Here are links regarding the issue, and the repair service offered on ebay.

This ebay vendor specifically mentions dim lcd display in their ad.

Thank you so much! I will try to fix it myself when I get time. Maybe I'll get my friend who's an EE to fix it for me.

I’ve done some looking into it. It appears everyone is talking about the backlight fluorescent lights, but I have a fading LCD display (the backlight works fine).

I spoke with the dealership, and they suggested buying a used cluster and swapping them out. I haven’t find something that specifically talks about the fading LCD issue.

I will keep looking into options.

I shipped it in to the ebay link. IT should be here by the weekend or next Monday, and I’ll report back.

When I spoke on the phone they said they will likely replace all failure prone components and they provide a lifetime warranty on repairs. We’ll see how it is when it gets back.

Well they're sending it back. Turns out their ebay listing was a lie.

Go figure. If you want a job done right you have to do it yourself.

I already ordered the part. **** this ****.

I just ordered a replacement one on ebay for $150 (I think prices will go down but whatever).

It’s very easy to replace, just remove a bunch of T10 torx screws (get the w220 instrument cluster removal tool).

Probably your best bet is to buy an instrument cluster on ebay and swap out hte LCD displays. Note there are 2 types of LCD displays, I’m not sure if it’s a facelift/non-facelift thing. I’m going to guess it is.

Hey, I'm sorry to reply years later but I'm getting desperate. I'm having issues with my CL center display and as a result, I'm missing out on a lot of important information. I was wondering if you can advise me on the replacement of the LCD display. Does it have to be coded? What does the job entail? Which center display offered is better? Thank you.

I found the solution here:

“4.7 uF microfarad , 35 volt smd are the small ones and the large ones are 10 uF , 35v.”
