There are two texts for DTC P2318:

P2318 Fault in CAN communication with control unit N15/5 (electronic selector lever module control module)
P2318 One or more messages from control unit N15/5(electronic selector lever module control module) are not available on the CAN bus.

This appears to be one of those mysterious DTCs that "just appear" sometimes. Quite a few folks have just ignored the code, and eventually it goes away.

If the problem is actually in the electronic selector lever unit, it could be a bit more trouble than most, as the shift module is a "theft relevant unit", which means that it is hard-coded to the car's VIN, and so can't just be replaced.

I am going to make a suggestion that might or might not help at all, but it is quick, easy, and cheap to try. The 722.6 transmission has a design flaw. The connector plug on the back end of the transmission develops an internal leak, which allows ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) to wick up the wire harness and fill the TCM (Transmission Control Module), which is located in the right SAM (Signal Acquisition Module).

Open the right SAM and carefully examine every wire harness for any traces of oil. If you find any trace of oil (ATF), wriggle and pull the harness, and its attached small black plastic box (the TCM) out of the SAM. Carefully open the TCM and use brake/parts cleaner in a spray can to completely clean the TCM inside and out. Let it dry, and put it back in. Let us know if it makes any difference.

With having no CAN message from the ESP control unit, what would be the first thing to check at that connector?
