4matic - how good is it?
Hey all,
I was just wondering about 4matic. No one seems to have made a big deal out of it, I was just wondering how good is it? Does it make much difference to traction and handling of the s-class? Is it something which is pretty much unneeded unless you live in alaska?

It is supposed to work pretty well. I know that here it is somewhat common, if you have a vacation place up in wisconsin and like to go up in the winter i know its handy. Lots of hills. In the winter its best to bring something with 4wd. I have never heard anything bad about 4matic. One of the best im sure

Its not really intended for off road use obviously but it does get better traction then 2wd cars with proper tires and driving you should have a big advantage over regular 2wd seadans in the snow and wet.

Oh ok, thanks for the replies guys. For some reason I thought that 4matic had some downsides to it, like a lot of extra weight or some handling penalties. I'm not sure why, but it seems like MB did good.

Probably the best thing I can say about about the 4matic is you never notice that it is there. It doesn't matter if it's 8 inches of snow, just lift the ride hieght and go. My drive is a 1/4 mile long and uphill ( about 80 feet of grade) all the way. Last winter we just drove out. period. no drama, no slipping, nothing. and that's with stock all seasons on it.
