God Damn, these cars are good

Just got back from a long drive with the S-Class. God damn these cars are good. I really really really wish we didn't have idiotic speed limits in this country.
I would happily have cruised at 120 for the whole drive, but I couldn't for fear of some lunatic police guy getting up my ****.

I swear, driving an S-Class makes an "normal" drive feel like half. An hour drive feels like a 30 min drive, a 1 hour 30 minute drive feels like a 45 minute drive. These cars truly are next level.

I did a road trip around Northern CA for thanksgiving, logged around 1,000 miles. Due to the lack of traffic, I was able to average 75+ mph and made great time everywhere. On the way home it was all coastal mountain roads. Though the road was narrow, pot-holed and sometimes dirt, ABC worked its magic and made every mile a true joy.

We did two marathon non-stop drives in our W140 back in the day with similar outcomes: first non-stop from Minneapolis to Colorado Springs in about 15 hours. Next non-stop from San Diego to Colorado Springs in about 18 hours. Both times, the experience was amazing. We also did a marathon round-trip of 5,000 miles from Colorado to Florida to Virginia, back to Chicago and finally back to Colorado. This was over 20 years ago when the roads were not so crowded. I would not want to do it anymore...

Yes the amount of traffic on the road really diminishes the joy versus yesteryear. I can remember piloting my Dads '67 250SE late at night at near triple digits speeds having the highways all to myself. Approaching overpasses looked like dropping from space into black holes.

I have driven my S500 for hours at triple digit speeds. Good V speed rated Michelin tires, front and rear radar detectors with front laser jammer and a Transponder Detector for long stretches of open highway that I know are being patrolled by Aircraft.

But..I have gotten a ticket or two over the past 15 years of ownership...mostly on back roads where the speed limit suddenly changes (aka "Speed Trap"). There are very few automobiles that compare to the Mercedes for comfortable, high speed, long distance cruising.

I drive a Corvette Convertible and a GMC Yukon Denali that are more refined regarding the new electronics, etc...but for me personally, give me my S500 any day to make a quick 500 mile road trip !!
