K&N filter for S500
Has anybody installed K&N filters (Part No. 33-2181) for their S500? I just installed a set for my 2000 S500, but I am not sure whether I should apply the self-sticking gasket as per their instruction or not.

The gaskets fit both air boxes; however, after the gaskets were applied, the thickness of the edges of the openings were changed (became thicker). The OEM filters do not require extra gaskets; therefore, the two parts of each air boxes would close properly, and easily screw tight. Now since there is an extra part between the two parts of each air box, pressure has to be applied so that the airbox could be closed to their original position (with OEM filter). My concern is that will this eventually break the plastic around the screws or break the edge of the filter. I know my explanation really sucked, but that's the best I can to describe the situation. Hope you know what I'm talking about.
By the way, thanks a lot for replying.

I used the gaskets when I had my 2001 CL55. They seemed to allow the airbox to close fine. On my 2003 CL55 I did not use the gaskets as they didn't fit right.
I called K&N and they said I must use the gaskets to assure proper air tight sealing around the filters.
On my 2003 I don't seem to notice any sealing problem without the gaskets.
Honestly, your probably ok not using them, however, K&N will tell you otherwise.

you know, once that K and N gasket is compressed for a while, it will be
easier to open/close the airbox. Just be careful when you cinch it down for the first time and don't overtighten.........

Thanx guys! I called K&N as well, and they told me the exact same thing - I must use the gasket. I phoned Mercedes and they told me not to worry, just make sure the screws are not over tightened. Thanks again!!
