Question regarding LED tail lights on W220 - what year did they first appear?

I'm curious about the LED tail lights in the W220, for the US market. Did they first appear on the 2000 model, or was it later (01/02)? I ask because several sources online say that the first car in the US with LED tail lights was the 2000 Cadillac DeVille, which implies that the 2000 S-Class did not have them. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

My wife's 1993 Cadillac STS had LEDs across the deck lid for the CMSL (Center Mounted Stop Light), though none in the taillights as far as I know.

No idea on the early W220s.

Mercedes
Led tails appeared In 2003 on the w220
2000-2002 were standard bulbs with two large white strips
many early cars have been updated with the led multi strip style

I think I'll have to answer my own question here - it was before 2003. In the 2000 film "Gone in Sixty Seconds" - there's a Mercedes S500 with the LED tail lights, seen here: http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_2798-Me...W220-2000.html

This movie came out in July 2000, so it can only be a 2000 model.

So this raises the question - why does the DeVille get the credit for being first, if the S-Class had them in 2000 as well? Maybe because the Merc only had LED brake lights, but not tail lights?
