W220 S320 Fuel Consumption a tad high?
Took my 1999 S320 on a 350km round trip. Overall the car performed admirably, but the fuel consumption is somewhat higher than I expected.
Average for the whole trip over 2 days is 9.7L/100km. This was 65% highway, 30% country roads (50-80km/hr, few traffic lights), and 5% city.
On the highway I can't get it below 9.0L/100km at average speed of ~115km/hr.
Main concern is that the consumption during cold-engine start/stop driving in the city seems extremely high, sometimes around 20-25L/100km. This engine seems to gulp fuel when idling cold. For example If I start the car cold, do ~3km of start/stop city driving before going on to the highway, it really takes a long time for the fuel consumption figure to come down to ~10-11L/km, before slowly setting down to 9.0-9.5L/100km.
Does this seem normal to you.
I live in the Netherlands, and city driving has a lot of start/stop. The distance between the lights are very short, rarely more than 1km, so that I guess doesn't help.
The onboard computer is very accurate by the way. It gave me almost the same result as manual calculation when filling at a pump.
In comparison my E39 530i that I had in Australia was definitely better on fuel. On the highway it would return about 7.5L/100km.
