What is it with this car and clunking?

Car: 2001 S430 w/ 108K miles

Has anyone ran into a whole lot of unidentifiable clunking after replacing the airmatic struts? I long ago have replaced the original 4 failed struts with replacement arnotts that were remanufactured and even I think replaced one of those too with another brand I can't remember but as it stands now the whole system in the rear is clunking when going over bumps. I've checked and re-checked suspension arms, joints, and just about every suspension component and I cannot find a problem that is causing clunking. Checked fuel tank sturdiness, removed spare tire from trunk, nothing. When my friend drives and I sit in the rear the clunking noise origin is coming right from the struts in the back seat area. Can these replacement airmatic struts go bad structurally and clunk but still hold air??

Mercedes
Yes all the aftermarket replacement remanufactured struts are junk , and arnnot has had terrible quality problems recently. The only solution to get rid of clunking is to use OEM struts, either used ones from a junkyard or brand new ones for Mercedes dealership.

Should I go for Bilsteins? They're like 800 bucks damn.
