04 W220 Questions

Why don’t the steering wheel adjust only upwards?

Why don’t the back headrest go down in back seat. Also the soft door close don’t work. (Is that a pump issue that’s located in the trunk)?

last thing, I can’t get the trunk open, key fob or door release.

The problem descriptions are pretty skimpy - be more detailed and more verbose...

On my cars, the steering wheel will move in and out, up and down. If yours doesn't, one possible cause is faulty contacts in the switch unit, with other possibilities as well, such as broken wires, faulty motor brushes, etc.

The common US headrest option seems to be that the rear headrests go down when you press the dash button. If they don't, the problem might be in the PSE (Pneumatic Service Equipment) system.

The soft-close failure is a pretty common failure. Again, PSE. There are two pneumatic actuators on each door - one for soft-close, one for lock/unlock. If an actuator fails, or there is a leaking line, the called operation will take longer to complete than the programmed time. After the time is exceeded for a particular unit several times, the PSE control system will stop trying to do that operation on that unit.

The trunk unlock system is on the PSE as well. Actuator failure is common.

Go to the right rear passenger area, and find the floor lamp located behind the passenger's heels. Pull it out of the wall, but don't bother to disconnect it. Find the yellow 25-Amp fuse near the right end of the row, and pull it out. Make sure that it isn't blown, and plug it back in. Try the headrests, soft close, and trunk opening. If a particular operation works a few times, then stops, the is a leak in that part of the system.

You should be able to open the trunk with the metal key. Move the tiny release button on the key fob to get the metal key out. Insert it in the keyhole by the trunk release button on the lid. If you turn the key one way and push it up, the trunk should release. If you turn it the other way, it shuts off the power release function, so that the valet parking attendant can't get into the trunk. The latch will probably be very stiff, as it almost never gets used, and never gets lubricated...

You can sometimes patch the leaking actuators. Door latch units are expensive and tough to change. Good luck.
