Keyless go "Key not Recognized"

Have two keys, one of them is giving a "Key not Recognized" error.

Checked the battery, +3.0v. Pulled it apart and saw nothing on the PCB indicating a porblem except maybe one of the RFID coils being every so slightly bent/misshapen.

The key had been through a washer/dryer cycle about a month ago but showed no signs of trouble. I've seen people suggest buying a replacement and swapping out the RFID coils.

Any ideas? How much circa is a replacement key including programming? (I know, local dealership)

If you end up going to the dealer for a replacement key, call every dealer within reasonable driving distance and check their price. The dealer cost can vary a LOT.

Goddammit I thought I had replied.

I am so sorry all. I took the key apart, cleaned it up, there was a bit of very difficult to see corrosion on the key, and then put it back together, now it works fine.

"AGM batteries are a scam"
Why you say that?
Original battery from my 2009 E class still works ok.
AGM replacement (not MB) in my S class lasted 9 years.

Fail constantly, can't be rebuilt; Iif it drains empty once, it's toast... you might not notice it right away, but next winter you will. They're more expensive, less versatile in the field, and a stupid overcomplication (special chargers and handling) to yield dubious results if any. Same with "xenon" headlights.

Experiences vary. I started working on vehicles in the early 1950's, when there was a battery rebuilding shop in the next town, and there were far more six-volt batteries than twelve-volts.

Fail constantly, Not in my experience.

can't be rebuilt; No one rebuilds automotive batteries of any modern type.

Iif it drains empty once, it's toast... you might not notice it right away, but next winter you will. Any lead/acid battery is damaged by continued total discharge. My experience has not shown AGM to be worse than any other type.

They're more expensive, Yep, partly because there are very few cheaply made AGM batteries in the market.

less versatile in the field, I have never experienced this, and don't understand it.

and a stupid overcomplication (special chargers and handling) to yield dubious results if any. Every one of my good quality, modern chargers handle standard, deep discharge, and AGM batteries. I am not aware of any more complex handling issues.

Your vehicles, your money - use the type of battery that you prefer.

People don't rebuild batteries b/c the scammy battery industry has made that difficult/impossible. Circular logic. I've found that AGM batteries are basically dead after a single discharge. They're not particularly well made, there are something like three battery manufacturers in the world, and everyone slaps their different branding on them. The quality has gone down precipitously, and AGM batteries feel it before regular lead-acid batteries do, due to their complexity. They cost more, and I don't see the benefit. They're less versatile because they require special chargers, because they fry themselves if they completely drain once, because you can't nuke one back to life by applying a huge current or boiling them, or doing any of the other tricks you can do with regular car batteries. You made my point for me: "Every one of my good quality, modern chargers". Can't use a bog simple standard transformer style charger that's been ubiquitous for decades.

AGM batteries weren't on the scene for the w220/w215 generation. I've transferred all my cars over to regular lead-acid, because **** AGM BATTERIES.

I like this experience/opinion exchange on agm vs lead acid batteries.

Maybe the mods can make this a separate thread.

I'd love to give this more of my opinion.
Heck, we could even include the "Xenon" topic.
thnx

Mercedes
There’s no sense in arguing about this, people have their opinions and preferences, and that’s the way it will be no one‘s going to convince each other otherwise. And AGM batteries were indeed factory fitted on W-2 20 and W-2 15. In fact they were some of the longest lasting Mercedes batteries ever, going 15 years or more in some cases
